The Footsteps of Thesiger arrive in UAE after gruelling 1,600 km trek

The Footsteps of Thesiger team have arrived into Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach after a gruelling 1,600 km (over 1000 miles) trek on foot and by camel from Salalah in Oman to the UAE. The team rode their camels for the final time along the shoreline and completed their epic journey on the sand at Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach.

Covering approximately 40 to 45km per day, the British explorer, Adrian Hayes, along with Emiratis Saeed Rashed Al Mesafry and Ghafan Mohammed Al Jabry, have braved some of toughest conditions on earth as they retraced the path under taken, in the forties, by Sir Wilfred Thesiger through the Empty Quarter (Al Rub’ Al Khali desert) amongst other places.

The team re-created the original expedition, walking in traditional Arabic clothes, travelling part of the way in bare feet, and following a diet of dates, rice, flour and water. The team navigated the journey by stars, sun, local knowledge and time travelled.

Twofour teamed up with Abu Dhabi Media and Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage to create a documentary capturing this incredible adventure. The project is directed by Alexis Girardet.
